FHC episode 1

 Now that school is back in session, the Summer Hiking Challenge is officially over. The Fall Hiking Challenge (FHC) has begun!

Since there are (so far) no live meetings for school on Wednesdays, it is still the perfect day to hike. For this first week, we chose an easy, repeat hike with a detour. Trail of Time at Mendenhall Glacier was our planned detour on the way to Nugget Falls.

I say "planned" because a little ways into the loop, we came across this mama bear and her cub. It is entirely likely that we could have quickly continued past them, but we turned back (actually backed away until we were out of sight) and decided to leave Trail of Time for another day. After talking to a park ranger, this bear is Nicky, from our first bear encounter in Alaska!

Near the visitor center, there was a pile of scat and a sign explaining the importance of studying scat. See? We're still learning! 

After learning about scat we continued on to Nugget Falls and spent some time playing on the beach. The falls were raging today, but the lake level has gone back down from the previous flooding.

The Coho have started to return to Steep Creek.

Welcome to the North

Hello again! The purpose of this page will be to record our adventures in Alaska. We left California (and our Lemon Tree) on July 27, 2019 and arrived in Juneau, Alaska on August 12, 2019.  My intent is to mainly post pictures and not as many words. SHC Episode 2

East Glacier Trail  was a little more challenging than we expected. This was a true hike, with switch backs, staircases carved out of the rocks, and of course, waterfalls. We have expanded out social bubble and have invited our friends the Zigmunds* to join us.  East Glacier Trail winds up the mountain, high above Nugget Falls. In fact, the part of Nugget Falls we saw from the beach was blocked by another layer of boulders. The trail follows along the river that pours into the Falls and was very loud. But, after we reached the back of the loop and were heading back down, it didn't take long for the sound of the river to be completely gone. Not part of the river or eventual Nugget Falls.  All the kids, before the older boys broke off at a faster pace.  Interesting rock formation.  The trees are growing on top of this boulder.  Also just a random waterfall.  A trail for a different day diverges from this point.
