April Adventures

April followed in March's footsteps, with more School From Home and much of the town shut down. On a walk one afternoon, we noticed a crab boat in harbor selling king crabs. Of course we had to stop and buy some.

 We made a tremendous mess in the kitchen boiling the crab and cracking the shells. *Note to selves: invest in some crab crackers.
But it was worth the mess!

 Aunt Leslie gave Mady a Fairy Garden, and we planted some succulents in the top and are using the bottom for Mady's rock and shell collection.

We weren't able to complete this hike due to snow and ice...we'll have to return later in the summer. Alex joined us on this hike, but I took the picture on the way out, and he had already reached the car.

One more hike, just Mady and Mom and more painted rocks. We left the sunflower but decided to keep the wish for a while.

Next up, Mount Roberts . Today was an unexpected sunny day and we knew we had to take advantage of it. We might have gone a little crazy on our choice of hike, but the views were worth it.  The trail guide book says this is the trailhead. Turns out it was the trailhead but has since been unmaintained. It was overgrown and steep, and a relief when we met up with the main trail.  Once we were on the main trail, the steepness did not subside. And the obstacles were diverse.   Fallen trees, streams, root stairways, rock stairways.  The balcony at the tramway. If the tram is operating, you can pay a small fee to ride down instead of hiking. We had to hike down.  A little but further up the mountain is this viewpoint. The railings were taken down (why?) so it was a little precarious. SHC Episode 2

East Glacier Trail  was a little more challenging than we expected. This was a true hike, with switch backs, staircases carved out of the rocks, and of course, waterfalls. We have expanded out social bubble and have invited our friends the Zigmunds* to join us.  East Glacier Trail winds up the mountain, high above Nugget Falls. In fact, the part of Nugget Falls we saw from the beach was blocked by another layer of boulders. The trail follows along the river that pours into the Falls and was very loud. But, after we reached the back of the loop and were heading back down, it didn't take long for the sound of the river to be completely gone. Not part of the river or eventual Nugget Falls.  All the kids, before the older boys broke off at a faster pace.  Interesting rock formation.  The trees are growing on top of this boulder.  Also just a random waterfall.  A trail for a different day diverges from this point. SHC episode 8

Treadwell Ditch and Mine Ruins This trail system is behind the ice rink, so I have spent many hours wandering through the ruins. There is a gate across the path at the top of one of the hills and since I am usually alone, I've never gone beyond the gate. Today we took safety in numbers and journeyed down the other side of the hill.  The beach is more rocky on this end, and littered with old steel pieces from the mine. We found ourselves trapped on the far side of the cave in pool, and the kids found a "path" up from the beach to the mail trail.  The path was narrow and steep, but it did lead us back.
