Snow

A much better day on the mountain weather wise. Mady's first trip up the ski lift.
 Snowy sand to mark the high tide line on the beach.
It is a little stormy at the beach today.
 Untouched snow at the school playground.

Now that their camp is over, it is time to practice!
 It's getting deep on the deck.

 The sun tried to peak out.

 Having fun along the docks.
 There's ice in the channel.
And in the drain pipes.
The view is ever changing, but always amazing.

I have been surprised by the fact that the kids go outside for recess, regardless of the weather. There have been days that have been windy, rainy, cold, snowy (sometimes all at once) and still the kids are outside.  January 16 was a different story. Indoor recess was finally proclaimed due to wind.  Wind gusts of up to 109 MPH!

SHC Episode 2

East Glacier Trail  was a little more challenging than we expected. This was a true hike, with switch backs, staircases carved out of the rocks, and of course, waterfalls. We have expanded out social bubble and have invited our friends the Zigmunds* to join us.  East Glacier Trail winds up the mountain, high above Nugget Falls. In fact, the part of Nugget Falls we saw from the beach was blocked by another layer of boulders. The trail follows along the river that pours into the Falls and was very loud. But, after we reached the back of the loop and were heading back down, it didn't take long for the sound of the river to be completely gone. Not part of the river or eventual Nugget Falls.  All the kids, before the older boys broke off at a faster pace.  Interesting rock formation.  The trees are growing on top of this boulder.  Also just a random waterfall.  A trail for a different day diverges from this point. DiPAC and Sealaska

Field trips in a new town are extra fun. I'm grateful I was able to join Mady's class on two field trips this month. First up was DiPac Salmon Hatchery . The salmon ladder had a few unintended users.   After watching the interlopers/opportunists, we were able to tour the facility and saw the giant tanks full of salmon fry, the touch tanks, aquarium, and the hands on salmon. Next up was a trip to the Walter Soboloff Building and the Sealaska Heritage Institute. We were given a quick tour and then we heard stories and songs from the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Peoples.

SHC episode 7

This week we planned to hike to the Dan Moller Cabin . It's a longer hike, so we packed sandwiches and headed out. The trail started out fairly steep and continued along a boardwalk through the meadow. When we came to a T in the road, our map said to continue up to get to the cabin. Unfortunately, we did not see a trail continuing up and decided to go south instead.  The southern trail led back to the neighborhood below.  We decided to take our lunches to the beach and try this trail another day. Many of the kids decided to wade in the water.  And of course hang out on the beach.
